AI Ghibli trend sparks backlash from artists

AI Ghibli trend

Artists and fans are criticizing a new AI trend that turns photos into Studio Ghibli-style images. Many argue that this technology disrespects real artists and their hard work.

Studio Ghibli, co-founded by Hayao Miyazaki, is known for its hand-drawn animated films like Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle. These films take years to create, with each frame drawn by hand. The AI trend, however, generates similar-looking images instantly, without any effort or creativity.

AI tools like Midjourney and DALL-E copy styles from artists without permission. OpenAI’s latest image generator, built into GPT-4o, has made it even easier for users to create Ghibli-style images. Many feel that these AI images lack depth, passion, and originality.

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari also joined the trend by updating his profile picture and sharing images of his late mother, former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

The controversy deepened when the White House used AI-generated Ghibli-style images to depict immigration arrests.

Many found this offensive, especially given Miyazaki’s past opposition to U.S. policies. Politicians also joined the trend by generating AI images of themselves.

A resurfaced documentary clip shows Miyazaki’s clear dislike for AI-generated art. He called it an “insult to life itself.”

Artists urge people to respect original work by supporting creators or learning to draw themselves. While AI is a powerful tool, critics argue it should not replace human creativity.
