The Inter Board Coordination Commission (IBCC) has approved a major policy change. It grants Science Group equivalence for foreign qualification students with additional mathematics instead of biology.
These students, who also meet other science subject requirements, can now be placed in the Science Group. This is applicable at the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) level.
This update removes a major barrier that previously limited their options for higher studies in science or engineering.

Under the old Scheme of Studies, such students were placed in the Arts Group. This placement restricted their chances to pursue intermediate-level science or engineering programs.
IBCC Executive Director Dr. Ghulam Ali Mallah said the decision was made in the best interest of students. He explained that excluding them for not having biology was unnecessary, especially when many aimed for pre-engineering tracks.
Even top achievers scoring above 90 percent had been denied Science Group admission in the past.
With the new rules, students who choose mathematics over biology at the SSC level will be eligible. They can now pursue engineering and other science-based programs in their first year of intermediate studies.
