Sindh Energy Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah criticized K-Electric (KE) for complaining about fossil fuel costs despite receiving cheaper electricity from Sindh’s solar and hybrid power projects.

Speaking at a session of the FPCCI Standing Committee on Energy, he called KE’s stance “regrettable” and emphasized transparency in billing.

Shah confirmed that K-Electric gets low-cost electricity from the Nooriabad Power Plant and other renewable energy sources, with more supply planned.

He stated that overbilling complaints would be addressed through a new consumer grievance mechanism being developed by the Sindh government.

The minister also opposed proposed taxes on solar energy, calling it clean, sustainable, and cost-effective. “The future lies in renewables. Sindh is committed to energy self-sufficiency through solar, wind, and Thar coal,” Shah said.

He announced that Rs 5 billion have been allocated for infrastructure upgrades in industrial zones and called for greater provincial representation in NEPRA.

“We demand three seats: one each for the Sindh government, business sector, and consumer groups,” he added.

Shah urged the federal government to cooperate seriously with Sindh’s energy plans and invited investors to take part in upcoming renewable energy initiatives.

He announced a new one-window operation to facilitate investment in this sector.

FPCCI Senior Vice President Fayyaz Mago echoed Shah’s concerns, urging reforms in net metering, tariffs, and grid access.

He highlighted Pakistan’s unused power generation capacity – 45,000 MW compared to 18,000 MW in actual usage – as evidence of poor planning. Mago also emphasized the potential of electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure.

The session included energy experts, industrialists, and policy advocates, all calling for quicker reforms and greater support for clean energy expansion.
