Punjab Iissues alert as rain threatens dam overflow

Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), citing the National Weather Forecasting Center and Flood Forecasting Division (FFD), has issued an alert stating that flows in the Jhelum, Chenab, and Ravi rivers, along with their associated nullahs, are expected to significantly increase from July 9. The rise in flows is subject to water releases from India.

In anticipation of heavy rains forecasted from July 8 to July 10 in Punjab, the Lahore division commissioner has directed local governments to take necessary measures. This includes evacuating localities near the rivers and installing flood sirens to ensure the safety of residents.

While most districts in the province are expected to experience hot and humid weather, specific areas such as Murree, Galliyat, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Attock, Chakwal, Sargodha, Mianwali, Faisalabad, Jhang, T T Singh, Bahawalnagar, Narowal, Sialkot, Sahiwal, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Mandi Bahauddin, and Hafizabad can expect rain, wind, and thundershowers. Heavy rainfall is also anticipated in Lahore, Sialkot, Narowal, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Jhelum, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Toba Tek Singh, and Mandi Bahauddin.

The authorities have issued a warning about potential flash flooding in the hill torrents of DG Khan Division. Urban flooding may occur in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, and Lahore, while landslides are a possibility in vulnerable areas of Murree during heavy rainfall.

Farmers are advised to manage their activities in accordance with the weather forecast, and tourists are urged to exercise caution and take necessary precautions during the wet spell. The public is advised to seek shelter in safe places during dust storms, thunderstorms, and rainfall to avoid any untoward incidents.

Precautionary measures have been put in place, including the mobilization and placement of flood fighting, rescue, and relief teams, along with required machinery and equipment, at identified suitable sites. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority Punjab has issued directions to various government departments and officials to ensure preparedness and coordination in response to the forecasted weather conditions.
