Revised electricity tariff to be introduced by October 31, says caretaker energy minister

Caretaker Energy Minister Muhammad Ali has announced that a revised electricity tariff will be introduced before October 31. Addressing a press conference alongside Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, Ali stated that the government is taking decisive action against electricity and gas theft.

Ali emphasized that the government is committed to controlling various factors affecting electricity tariffs. He assured that efforts are being made to provide low-cost power to industries starting from October 31. He attributed the inflated electricity bills to theft and the tariff hikes to the increase in the USD price.

The energy minister acknowledged the complexities of amending previous agreements but expressed the government’s determination to find solutions while adhering to the terms of those agreements. He pledged to provide cost-effective electricity to industries during the winter season.

Regarding solar energy, Ali noted that although there have been no reductions in the prices of solar equipment, the government will formulate a strategy to promote solarization.

Governor Tessori praised the energy minister for consistently fulfilling promises and expressed optimism about reviving the national economy. He highlighted the government’s efforts to provide relief to the masses within the framework of the IMF agreement, noting the recent decrease in the USD price below PKR 300.

Caretaker Minister for Information and Broadcasting Murtaza Solangi previously mentioned ongoing consultations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for relief in electricity bills. He indicated that final decisions were made during a recent cabinet meeting and that discussions with the IMF were underway. Solangi expected clarity on relief measures for electricity bills in the coming days and emphasized the consideration of energy-saving measures to address the ongoing energy crisis.

The government’s commitment to revising electricity tariffs and addressing the challenges affecting energy costs reflects its efforts to alleviate the financial burden on consumers and industries while ensuring sustainable energy solutions.
