Elon Musk unveils audio and video calling feature on X (formerly Twitter) on its one-year anniversary

A year after Elon Musk’s acquisition on October 27, 2022, X, formerly known as Twitter, has introduced a new audio and video calling feature under the leadership of Elon Musk.

The much-anticipated feature, which has been in the company’s announcements for several months, has now been officially launched. Currently, the audio and video calling functionality is exclusively available for iOS devices, with plans to roll it out for Android users in the near future, as per a statement issued by the company.

Elon Musk had previously teased the introduction of audio and video calls on X, and this feature aligns with his vision to transform X into a super app offering diverse services. However, users keen on utilizing this feature will need to subscribe to X Premium, the platform’s monthly subscription service.

Users will have control over their audio and video calls through Direct Messages settings. To initiate a call, at least one Direct Message to X is required, as stated by the company.

In a notable development, Elon Musk emphasized that, unlike conventional requirements, no phone number is necessary to make audio and video calls on X. Musk considers X as a global address book, eliminating the need for a phone number in the calling process.

Elon Musk’s overarching goal is to position X as an app encompassing a wide array of services for its users. The addition of the audio and video calling feature is expected to attract more users to the platform.

Looking ahead, the company has plans to integrate a payment feature into X, expanding its capabilities and making it a more comprehensive platform for users. Elon Musk’s ongoing efforts reflect a commitment to evolving X into a versatile and indispensable super app in the realm of social media.
