The biting winter in Karachi has brought with it a surge in egg prices, causing concern among residents as the cost of a dozen eggs reached Rs 400 in the retail market, and local eggs soared to Rs 800 per dozen.
As the cold winds swept through Shahr Quaid, the escalating prices have left citizens grappling with increased living expenses. Muhammad Idris, the Secretary of the Karachi Egg Dealers Welfare Association, attributed the price hike to farmers setting arbitrary prices and further increasing them with the rise in demand.
At the farm level, the cost of eggs has reached Rs 392 per dozen. Despite Commissioner Karachi having set the retail price at Rs 290 per dozen, this directive appears to be disregarded by farmers and sellers. The absence of the official price list has left consumers without legal protection against these additional charges, leading to the emergence of the term ‘egg mafia.’
Frustrated citizens voiced their concerns, indicating that the administration’s failure to release an official price list has contributed to the unchecked surge in egg prices. The rising cost, with an increase of more than Rs 30 per dozen within a week, has made it challenging for many households to afford eggs for breakfast.
As Karachi faces the challenges of winter, citizens hope for swift action from authorities to regulate egg prices, ensuring affordability for the general public during the harsh weather conditions.
