Imran Khan, the former prime minister and current head of the PTI, said on Wednesday that the organization’s drive for “Haqeeqi Azaadi” (true freedom) would start on Saturday, September 24, and urged followers to be ready for his announcement.
Imran has repeatedly asked that a date for “fair and free” snap elections be given since being removed from power, stating that if not, he will protest the current administration in the streets.
In May, the PTI tried a lengthy march to Islamabad, but the police cracked down and put an end to it. Imran reiterated his call for immediate elections last week, saying the PTI’s tolerance was running out.
Before he revealed intentions for the election, he had hoped that the results would be announced.
In a speech given today at a lawyer’s conference in Lahore, he declared, “I will give a call and we will get our nation emancipated in actual terms.”
Following the federal government’s claim that “some individuals were going towards Islamabad to get their political demands recognised,” Imran increased security measures in Red Zone regions of Islamabad.
The PTI leader reiterated his earlier remarks during his speech in Chakwal on Monday when he warned that people “issue threats from unknown numbers” should receive threats in return.
He criticised the current administration’s economic policies, claiming that the sharp depreciation of the rupee versus the dollar has driven up inflation and unemployment.
He claimed that while the poor were suffering, those in the government were getting richer. Imran also lamented the absence of the rule of law and the uneven implementation of justice in contrast to western nations.
He criticised the recent crackdown on some journalists who were deemed to be pro-PTI and said that no one in western nations ever got threats from ominous phone numbers.
“The law enforcement organisations tasked with upholding the rule of law are the ones breaching the law and treating people unfairly.”
He continued by saying that a lack of the rule of law discouraged investment and increased corruption.
