The Sindh government has declared free public access to all provincial museums and heritage sites from August 1 to 14.

This move is part of the Independence Day celebrations aimed at promoting the region’s rich cultural heritage.

The announcement came from the Sindh Culture, Tourism, Antiquities, and Archives Department. Officials said the goal is to encourage people to explore historical and cultural landmarks across the province.

This year’s celebrations follow the theme “Marka-e-Haq”, which honors Pakistan’s military response during Operation Banyan-um-Marsoos amid recent tensions with India.

The theme highlights national unity and resilience.

The free access covers major sites such as:

  • Quaid-e-Azam House Museum
  • Mohenjo Daro
  • Sindh Provincial Museum, Hyderabad
  • Folk and Craft Museum, Sehwan Sharif
  • Banbhore Museum near Thatta
  • Kot Diji Museum, Khairpur
  • Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Museum, Larkana

Additional sites include Mukhi House, Umarkot Fort Museum, Naukot Fort Museum, Laar Museum Badin, Marvi Cultural Centre Bhalwa, and Bhit Shah Cultural Centre.

Historical and archaeological landmarks such as Shah Jahan Mosque (Thatta), Bhanbhore, Kot Diji, Satiyyan Jo Astaan, Umarkot Fort, and Naukot Fort are also open for free.

The department is also offering 50pc discount on all official publications, books and free access to all government-managed tourist destinations

Karachi’s Archives Gallery, featuring rare manuscripts and historical photographs, will remain open to the public. Art galleries like Sambara Art Gallery (Karachi), Zafar Kazmi Art Gallery, and Mehran Arts Council Gallery (both in Hyderabad) will also offer free entry.

To enhance the celebratory mood, grand musical events featuring top Pakistani singers will be held in Hyderabad, Sukkur, and Karachi’s National Stadium. Tourist and historical locations will be adorned with national flags and lights.

The decision was finalized in a meeting led by Provincial Minister Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah, following instructions from the Sindh Chief Minister, Murad Ali Shah.

Earlier this year, Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah emphasized the need to boost tourism, calling for development projects at Keenjher Lake, Haleji Lake, and Gorakh Hill Resort.
