DRF report highlights alarming rate of online harassment against women in Pakistan

A recent report by the Digital Rights Foundation (DRF) has shed light on the disturbing prevalence of online harassment faced by women in Pakistan, revealing concerning statistics regarding the extent of the issue.

As per the findings published in leading publications such as Jang and The News, women accounted for a staggering 58 percent of online harassment complaints received by DRF in the year 2023. This alarming figure underscores the urgent need for targeted interventions to address the safety and security concerns of women in digital spaces.

The report further highlighted that the province of Punjab recorded the highest number of online harassment complaints, with a significant portion of victims being women. This trend underscores the pervasive nature of online harassment across different regions of the country, necessitating concerted efforts to tackle the issue comprehensively.

In total, DRF received 2,473 complaints of online harassment in the year 2023, indicating the scale of the challenge at hand. These complaints represent instances of various forms of online abuse, ranging from cyberbullying to stalking and harassment on social media platforms.

The prevalence of online harassment poses significant challenges to the safety and well-being of women, often leading to psychological distress and inhibiting their participation in digital spaces. Recognizing the urgency of the issue, stakeholders must collaborate to implement effective measures aimed at combating online harassment and ensuring a safer online environment for all individuals, particularly women.

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, proactive steps must be taken to empower women to navigate online platforms securely and assert their digital rights without fear of harassment or intimidation. Only through collective action and a concerted commitment to gender equality can meaningful progress be made in addressing the scourge of online harassment in Pakistan.
