The Minimum Wage Board of Sindh has announced an upward revision of wages for factory workers, as reported by ARY News on Tuesday.
According to Zulfiqar Ali Nizamani, Chairman of the Sindh Minimum Wage Board, skilled workers in the province will now receive a minimum monthly wage of Rs 33,280, while unskilled workers will receive Rs 32,000. These revised minimum wages will be effective from July 1, 2023.
Nizamani emphasized that factory owners are legally obligated to ensure that their workers receive these minimum wages. He also noted that objections to this decision can be submitted within a 14-day period.
Furthermore, the Chairman of the Sindh Minimum Wage Board stated that strict action will be taken against employers who fail to pay their workers the mandated minimum wages.
This announcement follows a previous ruling by the Sindh High Court (SHC), which ordered the implementation of minimum wage standards set by the Sindh government. The SHC directed the government to ensure the enforcement of a minimum monthly wage of Rs 25,000 for sanitary workers. The court also instructed the labor department to solicit reports from various departments for further review of this matter.
