More than 43,000 incidents of street crime have been reported in Karachi in the first eight months of 2025, with 60 citizens killed and 216 others injured during robbery resistance.

During the same period, 11,268 mobile phones were snatched from citizens across Karachi, while 1,430 vehicles and 30,721 motorcycles were either stolen or taken away during armed robberies.

Daily averages reveal the severity of the situation: 46 mobile phones snatched, six vehicles stolen or snatched, and 126 motorcycles taken away, highlighting the continuing threat posed by organized crime groups in the metropolis.

Records show that in the first eight months of 2024, 13,406 mobile phones were snatched, along with 1,342 vehicles and 34,867 motorcycles, indicating a slight decline this year in overall numbers.

However, despite the drop in reported incidents, fatalities remain alarming.

Last month, several senior jail officials were found guilty in the case in which a total of 225 prisoners managed to escape the facility.

The investigation report has been completed, according to which Superintendent Arshad Shah, Assistant Superintendent Abdullah, and Deputy Superintendent Zulfiqar Pirzada were named as responsible officers.

The report recommended registering First Investigation Reports (FIRs) against them and declared the IG and DIG Prisons guilty of negligence.

Investigators stated the Malir Jail escape was not mere negligence but a complete system failure. The findings described the incident as both an administrative and institutional collapse.
