In a gesture marking the end of his diplomatic assignment, the US Consul General in Karachi, Scott Urbom, paid a farewell visit to his time spent in the city.
The US Consul General in Karachi, Scott Urbom, paid a farewell visit to Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, where he reflected on his stay in the city. Despite a short tenure, Urbom said he was leaving with many positive memories of Karachi.
At the Governor House, a child dressed in traditional Pakistani attire presented him with a bouquet. Urbom was accompanied by his deputy, the US Political and Economic Chief, and other officials.
During the meeting, Governor Tessori and Urbom discussed ways to strengthen Pakistan-US relations and addressed matters of mutual interest. The governor praised Urbom’s role in enhancing bilateral ties, calling his contributions commendable.

Following the meeting, a formal dinner was hosted in the Darbar Hall. Diplomats from China, Türkiye, the UAE, Germany, Japan, Kuwait, Bangladesh, Oman, Bahrain, Iraq, and members of the business community attended. Urbom thanked the governor, diplomatic corps, and guests for attending despite heavy rain in the city.
In his speech, Urbom highlighted Governor Tessori’s partnership and expressed gratitude for the hospitality he received in Pakistan. He also conveyed US condolences over recent rain-related losses in Karachi and appreciated the resilience of the city’s residents, praising their spirit of helping each other during difficult times.
Urbom took office on August 27, 2024, and is returning to the United States after nearly a year of service. Reflecting on Pakistan-US relations, he noted significant progress in counterterrorism, trade, and investment, calling it an encouraging time for both nations.

He added that his stay in Karachi was brief but full of positive experiences. He emphasized that the people of Karachi made his time memorable through their warmth and hospitality. “What makes Karachi special is its people,” Urbom said, expressing deep gratitude.
The farewell ceremony ended with a cake-cutting event, joined by the governor and several diplomats. The moment gained attention when Tessori playfully initiated a handshake between the Chinese and Turkish consuls, sparking smiles among attendees.
Chinese Consul General extended best wishes to Urbom for his next assignment.
Urbom has previously served in Afghanistan and nearly all South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries. He was Director of the Office of India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Maldives Affairs, and also Deputy Director for Korean Affairs. Before his Pakistan assignment, he served in China, Barbados, and Ukraine.
A graduate of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, Urbom also holds master’s degrees from Harvard University and the National War College. His wife, Sonia, is a teacher and former US diplomat.
