The UK-supported BRAVE programme has transformed Government Girls Primary School (GGPS) Chanri in Badin into a safe haven for learning and shelter which was destroyed in the devastating floods of 2024.

The Building Resilience and Addressing Vulnerability in Emergencies (BRAVE) initiative, implemented with Concern Worldwide and the SAMI Foundation, upgraded the school with sanitation facilities, clean drinking water, and solar power.

Previously, during floods, up to 175 displaced villagers took refuge at the school, but without toilets, clean water, or electricity.

Teacher and activist Faheem Ali Memon said women and children suffered the most due to poor facilities. Now, with working toilets, handwashing stations, a hand pump, and a 5KW solar system, families can safely stay during disasters while children continue learning.

Headmistress Ms. Reeta called the upgrades a blessing, noting electricity, water, and sanitation are now available all the time. She said the school can remain connected during emergencies and receive early warnings.

Enrollment at GGPS Chanri has risen by 20 percent, with more girls attending regularly. Hygiene sessions conducted by the student Hygiene Club are also promoting better practices within households.

Local elder Mairaj said the improvements restored dignity, ensuring women and children now have a private, safe place during floods.

The BRAVE programme is still active nationwide as this year’s monsoon rains continue to threaten vulnerable communities. It aims to provide both immediate relief and long-term resilience against disasters in Pakistan.

For Badin’s flood-hit families, the transformed school is now more than just a classroom. It stands as a symbol of safety, dignity, and hope for the future.
