The visa, valid for six months with the option to renew for another six, targets digital nomads, retirees, remote workers, and families seeking an affordable lifestyle in a tropical setting. Holders can work remotely for foreign employers but are prohibited from joining the local labor market.
Visa benefits include the ability to apply for an Occupation Permit to work or invest locally and purchase property under specific schemes.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must have:
Proof of accommodation
Valid travel and health insurance
Foreign-source income (minimum USD 1,500/month for individuals, plus USD 500/month per dependent)
A valid passport (six-month minimum validity)
Recent passport-size photographs
Proof of foreign employment or business ownership
Return or onward travel ticket
Families with school-age children must also obtain a Mauritius Study Visa for minors attending school.
Application Process
Applications are submitted online via the official Economic Development Board website (www.edbmauritius.org). Processing typically takes 48 hours, and approved e-visas are emailed to applicants, with official stamping upon arrival.
Foreign spending through international debit or credit cards is tax-exempt. However, individuals staying 183 days or more annually become tax residents, subject to a 15% income tax.
