9, 10 Muharram holidays to fall on weekend

Muharram holidays in Pakistan

The Islamic month of Muharram is likely to begin on Friday, June 27, based on moon sighting predictions, with 9th and 10th of Muharram are observed as public holidays.

This time, both 9th and 10th of Muharram holidays fall on the weekend – Saturday and Sunday, meaning most employees are not likely to get extra days off during the working week.

The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, led by Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad, will meet in Quetta on Thursday to officially sight the moon. Zonal meetings will also take place in cities like Lahore.

Muharram is a sacred month for Muslims. It marks the beginning of the Islamic lunar year and is deeply observed with respect and mourning across Pakistan.

In the country, the 9th and 10th of Muharram are marked with religious gatherings, processions, and sermons in remembrance of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA) at Karbala.

Security is usually tightened during these days to ensure peaceful observances, and processions are held in major cities, attracting large gatherings of people.

Citizens are advised to plan ahead since traffic diversions, security checks, and road closures are often implemented during the Ashura processions in Karachi. Authorities may still issue official holiday notifications later, but no extra weekday offs are expected as both Muharram days fall on a weekend this year.
