The government of Sindh is expected to once again extend the deadline for vehicle registration and installation of Ajrak design number plates across the province.
This decision comes amid growing public pressure as millions of vehicle owners in the province have yet to comply with the government’s campaign.
The current deadline of May 15, 2025, may now be moved to May 31, offering vehicle owners additional time to complete the registration process and receive the new number plates.
Sources close to the development revealed that a large number of people have fulfilled the requirements, but many are still pending.
The authorities believe the extension could help increase compliance, but they also plan to implement strict penalties after the final date. These include seizing vehicles with old number plates and imposing heavy fines on non-compliant owners.
The new Ajrak design number plates, inspired by Sindh’s cultural heritage, are equipped with modern security features to enhance traceability and reduce the chances of misuse.
The government has declared the installation of these plates’ mandatory for all vehicles, small and large, throughout the province.
Although officials have confirmed that around 7 million vehicles exist in Sindh, the Excise Department has not released detailed statistics on different types of vehicles, despite multiple media inquiries.
Enforcing the Ajrak plates is said to be a central part of the government’s policy to improve road safety and control unregistered vehicles.
It is worth mentioning here that last month, the Sindh’s Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department extended the deadline for vehicle registration and number plate across the province.
The Provincial Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla announced that citizens now have until May 15, 2025, to switch to new smart registration cards.
A notification has been issued by the department confirming the extension, giving vehicle owners more time to comply with the updated system.
