NED University has changed its admission policy for the 2025/26 academic year due to the low pass rates in Karachi’s intermediate exams.
The new policy gives more weight to the entrance test and less to intermediate results. Admissions will now be based on 60 percent entrance test score and 40 percent intermediate marks, instead of the previous 50/50 split.
This decision comes after a sharp decline in intermediate pass rates of Karachi students.
The pre-engineering pass rate dropped to 29 percent, while pre-medical fell to 35 percent. Students must now score at least 57 percent in intermediate to apply for admission.
The change follows a fact-finding report led by Education Minister Syed Sardar Shah, which suggested increasing marks for key subjects like physics, chemistry, and mathematics. However, the recommendations were not implemented.

NED University’s Vice-Chancellor, Dr Tufail Ahmed, explained that the new system ensures only capable students get admitted, maintaining education quality.
The admission advertisement will be released in the last week of March. The first entrance test is scheduled for May 24, while the second will be on July 12.
The new academic session starts on August 18, offering 3,016 seats across 35 programs, with 100 extra seats added.
This policy aims to ensure fair selection and maintain academic standards in response to the challenging education situation.
