The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has issued an important reminder regarding the cancellation of Computerized National Identity Cards (CNIC) for deceased individuals.
As per NADRA, under Section 17(1) of the NADRA Ordinance, it is mandatory to cancel the CNIC of a deceased person within 60 days of their death.
To apply for the cancellation of a CNIC, CRC, NICOP, or POC due to the death of a Pakistani citizen or ex-Pakistani, immediate family members must provide certain documents, including:
- Computerized death certificate issued by the Union Council
- Original CNIC of the deceased person
In cases where the original CNIC is unavailable, the CNIC number can be provided to process the cancellation and obtain the CNIC cancellation certificate.
NADRA has clarified that there is no fee to obtain the cancellation certificate.
The authority stressed the importance of this process to prevent any potential misuse of the identity card and urged citizens to act promptly to ensure data security and comply with legal requirements.
