Vegetable prices in Karachi reach new heights after floods, rains

In addition to leaving a trail of destruction and fatalities across the provinces of Sindh and Balochistan, torrential rains and flooding have sent vegetable prices in Karachi through the roof.

Floods and heavy rains in Sindh and Balochistan have severely harmed the various crops. Prices have skyrocketed since the supply of vegetables from Baluchistan and other areas of Sindh to Karachi was cut off.

According to information, onions are priced per kilogramme in Karachi’s local market between Rs120 and Rs140. Ladyfinger at Rs160 to 170 per kg, Tomato at Rs160 per kg, and Spinach at Rs250 per kg. At 320 rupees per kilogramme, garlic is sold.

In the neighbourhood vegetable market in Karachi, aubergines are priced at Rs150 per kilogramme.

A minister for Sindh also raised concern about a food crisis earlier on Wednesday, noting that most of the nation’s crops had been totally devastated.

Ismail Rahu, the environment minister for Sindh, said the province’s current flood condition was more hazardous than the 2010 megaflood.

The Sindh minister warned that most crops, including cotton, sugarcane, bananas, sesame, dates, rice, and other items, have been destroyed due to persistent rains and flood conditions. As a result, there may be a shortage of food items in Sindh and Balochistan, and the country may experience a food crisis.
