Tent city to house 100,000 flood victims in Karachi

In Karachi’s Malir neighbourhood, the Sindh government has allotted 100 acres of land for the construction of a tent city for flood victims.

When discussing the tent city, deputy commissioner Malir stated that sector 18 of the Malir district will receive a 100-acre parcel of land. As many as 100,000 flood victims will be housed in the area’s thousands of tents, he said.

He mentioned that the affected people will receive various facilities in the camps in addition to housing.

Murad Ali Shah, the chief minister of Sindh, stated on Thursday that 1.5 million tents are needed, but only 250,000 have been planned.

Talking to media in Thatta after visiting flood-hit areas of Sujawal, Sindh CM said that the government has so far provided 2.5 Lac tents and two Lac tarpaulin sheds to flood affected people. “Not even 33 percent flood victims provided tents due to unavailability,” he said.

“We are taking things from all manufacturers in the country,” Shah said. “Relief items also coming from international support,” he said.

On September 1, the Sindh High Court (SHC) Sukkur bench ruled that tent towns for flood victims be built right away throughout the province.

The SHC Sukkur bench, headed over by Justice Zafar Ahmed Rajput, expressed displeasure with the district administration’s handling of relief and rescue efforts while hearing a matter involving the devastation brought on by recent rains and floods.

The SHC bench questioned the commissioner about the number of persons who had been saved and the amenities that had been provided for them. The Sindh government was ordered by the court to quickly establish 10 cities around the province for the flood victims.
