Senate committee summons PIA CEO in Karachi plane crash investigation

The Senate Standing Committee on Aviation has summoned Air Marshal Arshad Malik, CEO of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), over the Karachi plane crash last year.

A meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Aviation was held on Thursday. In the meeting, DG Civil Aviation said that the air operation to Swat was stopped as an average of only six passengers travelled in one flight.

Senator Sherry Rehman asked why was civil aviation not providing helicopter service for the promotion of tourism to with the DG said that the process of helicopter service for tourists is in the pipeline.

Senator Afnanullah asked what happened to the issue of fake licensing of pilots. On which the DG said that out of 262, only 82 pilots’ licenses turned out to be fake. Senator Aun Abbas said that if the licenses were fake then a case should be registered against the persons involved under Section 302 of the PPC. He further questioned how it was possible that no one knew about the matter of fake licenses before it recently came to light.

As the meeting concluded, Air Marshal Arshad Malik, CEO of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) was summoned along with the record of the Karachi plane crash.

The Secretary of Civil Aviation said that PIA owes Rs 455 billion to the national esqueture and that a restructuring plan of the organisation has been sent to the cabinet.
