PPP seeks JUI-F support for Karachi mayor position as majority threatened

The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has approached the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) seeking its support for the position of mayor in Karachi after facing a threat to its majority. This move comes after the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) backed the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) for the mayoral spot.

The PPP’s Karachi division has requested the JUI-F’s support in the polls for the mayor and deputy mayor positions in the city. While both parties have expressed a willingness to work together, the JUI-F will make its final decision after consulting with its central leadership.

PPP Karachi President Saeed Ghani and General Secretary Javed Nagori met with JUI-F Sindh General Secretary Allama Rashid Mahmood Soomro to discuss a potential alliance. The meeting primarily focused on the upcoming local elections in Karachi, covering various towns and union councils.

Soomro highlighted the JUI-F’s commitment to principled politics, emphasizing the importance of keeping dialogue open. He stated that the party has formed alliances with different political groups in line with this principle.

Last week, the PTI supported the JI for the mayoral position in Karachi, accusing the ruling party PPP of involvement in pre-poll rigging.
