NLC chalks out plan to help avert flooding in Orangi storm water drain

In the wake of the weather forecast and expected rains in Karachi, National Logistics Cell (NLC) has chalked out a detailed plan to help avert flooding in the Orangi storm water drain and minimize the chance of damage to the properties.

According to the plan, surveillance of the critical points will be carried out round the clock to monitor the flow of rainwater. Special attention is being paid to different low-lying areas along with the project sites. In this regard, long boom excavators and heavy and light dewatering pumps are being deployed in vulnerable areas to provide timely help in case of any eventuality.

NLC is carrying out continuous dredging at all chocking points to avoid spillover of water into the streets during rain. More than 20,000 sand bags have been placed on drain beds along with low-lying areas.

Apart from the construction of protection bunds, removal of the stockpiles and coffer dams with the help of heavy machinery is in progress to channel stormwater flow through the nullah.

NLC has set up flood emergency response cells at Shadab Ground, main camp, SITE Area, and Chaman Cinema localities to provide quick response in case of any untoward situation. The emergency response cells will be working 24/7 during the upcoming rainy spell. Long boom excavators, dumpers, heavy and light dewatering pumps, and other resources have been placed at the disposal of these emergency response cells.  The emergency response cell will maintain close coordination with relevant authorities to provide timely assistance to the people.
