The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has given approval for the imposition of an additional surcharge of Rs 52 paise per unit on K-Electric consumers, as requested by the federal government. The decision, once approved by NEPRA, has been forwarded to the federal government.
The statement further clarified that the additional surcharge will be effective from December 2023 to November 2024 for electricity consumers serviced by the Karachi-based distribution company. As a result of this surcharge, K-Electric customers are anticipated to bear an additional burden of over Rs 24.05 billion. The federal government is expected to issue the final notification for the implementation of the surcharge.
It was emphasized in the NEPRA statement that the increase would not be applicable to the Lifeline customers of K-Electric. This move is likely to have financial implications for consumers in Karachi, raising concerns among citizens about the impact on their electricity bills.
