Madhubala undergoes surgery at Karachi Zoo

One of the two elephants housed at the Karachi Zoo, Madhubala, who was captured and taken from her mother at a young age in Tanzania and brought to Pakistan 14 years ago, will finally receive treatment on Tuesday (today) for her damaged and infected tusks, which have caused her pain for a number of years.

Interest from animal rights activists and international specialists made the dental surgery possible. Experts claim that the treatment is being performed on the elephant in a special style and for the first time internationally.

Veterinarians are flying in from Berlin, and intend to do the two-tusk procedure while the elephant remains under a “standing” anaesthesia that has never before been utilised to treat animals (in the world).

Madhubala and Noor Jahan, the other female pachyderm whose tusk surgery is scheduled for Wednesday were examined by their doctors early on Tuesday and preparations were made for the procedure.

The treatment, according to the experts, is so unique that they have to develop special equipment for it.
