In a significant development, Imran Khan, Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has communicated his decision not to run for the chairmanship in the upcoming intra-party elections. Sources reveal that this decision was conveyed to the party’s core committee by Imran Khan himself, currently serving a sentence in the Toshakhana case.
Imran Khan’s absence from the race for the party’s top position has paved the way for a new candidate to emerge as the chairman during the intra-party elections. The repercussions of the Toshakhana case sentencing are cited as the primary reason behind Khan’s decision to step aside.
Insiders suggest that the intra-party elections will encompass not only the chairmanship but also elections for the vice chairman and various organizational positions within PTI. The chairman, once elected, is expected to wield authority in approving organizational matters and decisions within the party.
While Imran Khan is anticipated to participate in the intra-party elections as chairman once his sentence concludes, the decision on the new chairman for the interim period will reportedly be made by Khan himself. This strategic move aligns with PTI’s commitment to maintaining stability and continuity within the party during this transitional phase.
Shirafazl Marwat, Imran Khan’s lawyer and the senior vice president of PTI, confirmed the Chairman’s decision to abstain from the intra-party elections. Marwat emphasized that Imran Khan would not be partaking in the electoral process for the chairmanship.
It is worth noting that the Election Commission has scheduled the intra-party elections for Tehreek-e-Insaf on Friday, adding an additional layer of significance to the unfolding developments within the party’s leadership.
