Dairy farmers refuse to set milk price at Rs170/litre

The Dairy Farmers Association (DFA) and Commissioner Karachi failed to reach an agreement because the dairy farmers refused to fix the milk price at Rs170/litre.

Milk is now being sold in the metropolitan area for Rs180-200.

The most recent official rate list for milk was announced in December 2021, with the city’s milk price fixed at Rs120. Commissioner Karachi has offered to raise the official price to Rs170, but the farmers have stated that the per litre production cost is Rs200.

President DFA, on the other hand, has stated that the Commissioner has pledged to releasing the new milk price by tomorrow.

Earlier that day, on October 19, the dairy cow farmers group threatened to raise prices after the district government raided various outlets in Karachi.

According to reports, Commissioner Karachi directed that operations be carried out and dairy outlets selling milk at exorbitant rates be sealed. The dairy cattle producers’ organisation (DCFA) vowed to hike prices even higher if the administration did not halt its activities against dairy shops.

Why is the administration pushing down on shopkeepers, according to DCFA President Shakri Gujjar, since the union hiked the prices? Dairy vendors are being victimised by the Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner Karachi, he noted.
