The dengue epidemic, a vector-borne viral illness, has raised alarms in the wake of the exceptional floods and torrential rains, according to Sindh Minister for Health Dr. Azra Pechuho. The port city is reporting 100-150 daily cases of the disease.
Speaking to media, Pechuho stated that 3,434 dengue infections were found in Karachi alone, out of the 3,830 dengue cases that have been documented throughout Sindh thus far this year.
Nine people have passed away from the viral sickness spread by vectors so far this year, she continued.
The provincial health minister reported that due to the recent rise in dengue cases, hospital bed occupancy had reached 80–85%.
Senator Sherry Rehman, the minister for climate change, had predicted a 50% increase in dengue virus infections, particularly in Karachi.
The federal minister said there is a “outbreak” of dengue in Karachi, where hundreds of patients are taken to hospitals every day.
