A dramatic Super Over between India and Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup 2025 turned talk of the town when a run-out appeal against Sri Lankan batter Dasun Shanaka was overturned, sparking debate among fans.
Here’s what happened:
After Sri Lanka tied the match while chasing India’s record-breaking total, the game moved to a Super Over decider.
On the fourth ball of the Super Over, bowled by Arshdeep Singh, Sri Lanka had already lost one wicket.
Shanaka missed the delivery and attempted a risky single. India’s wicketkeeper quickly collected the ball and dislodged the bails, seemingly catching Shanaka short of his ground.
The on-field umpire initially gave Shanaka out, however, the Indian bowler, Arshdeep Singh, was simultaneously appealing for a possible edge, believing Shanaka might have nicked the ball.
The umpire gave the decision before Sanju Samson dislodged the bails.
As a result, the decision went for a DRS review for the caught-behind appeal.
Shanaka reviewed the caught-behind call, and the third umpire found no edge.
Since the review was only for the caught-behind and not for the run-out, the third umpire upon closer inspection, determined that Shanaka had not edged the ball, overturning the original decision, declaring him not out.
