Former Pakistan cricket team captain Shahid Afridi has clarified the circumstances surrounding a viral selfie with Israeli supporters, emphasizing his unawareness of their political affiliations at the time the photo was taken.
Afridi addressed the situation on social media, rejecting claims of support from pro-Israel groups. He explained that the selfie, taken with members of the ‘Northwest Friends of Israel’ in the UK, was an innocent interaction, believing them to be regular fans.
“I was approached by fans for a selfie on a street in Manchester, UK,” Afridi said. “I had no idea they would later use the picture to spread propaganda and misrepresent my stance.”
The incident gained traction when the Israeli group shared the photo online, insinuating Afridi’s support for their cause. In response, Afridi swiftly issued a statement to dispel any misunderstandings.
Expressing his dismay over the incident, Afridi said, “It is truly disheartening to see innocent people suffering in Palestine. Any image does not reflect my support for situations where human lives are at risk.”
Afridi further elaborated on his social media, “I take pictures with fans all over the world, and Manchester was no different. It is unimaginable that such a moment of fan interaction would be twisted into something political.”
He concluded his message with a heartfelt plea for peace, stating, “I pray for peace, the end of this war, and freedom. Let’s not believe everything we see on the internet and focus on the human suffering that needs our attention.”
Afridi’s clarification comes amidst rising tensions and ongoing conflict in Palestine, where he has consistently voiced his concern for the victims and called for an end to the violence.
