Sindh Police on high alert ahead of general elections, enhances security measures

In anticipation of the upcoming general elections scheduled for February 8, Inspector General of Sindh Police (IGP) Riffat Mukhtar has issued directives to all police officials to remain on high alert and bolster security measures across the province. Mukhtar emphasized the paramount importance of ensuring comprehensive security arrangements at every level to safeguard voters, candidates, polling staff, and election materials.

Addressing a news briefing in Karachi, Sindh’s provincial police chief underscored the need for enhanced vigilance and interaction with intelligence personnel to preempt any untoward incidents. Mukhtar stressed the imperative of proactive patrolling and snap-checking at the district level to maintain a robust security posture in the lead-up to the elections.

The directive comes in the wake of recent deadly blasts in Balochistan’s Pishin and Qila Saifullah districts, which claimed the lives of at least 28 individuals. The escalating terrorist activities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan have raised concerns, prompting heightened security measures ahead of the polls.

In a bid to address potential challenges, the Senate previously adopted a resolution urging a delay in the general elections due to extreme weather conditions in hilly areas and the deteriorating security situation. However, the resolution faced criticism from major political parties, including PPP, PML-N, and PTI, who opposed any delay in the electoral process.

Despite reservations, the resolution found support from JUI-F leader Fazlur Rehman, who echoed concerns over the security environment, particularly in KP and Balochistan. Rehman emphasized the need for a conducive election campaign environment and called for authorities to address security apprehensions effectively.

As preparations for the general elections intensify, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and integrity of the electoral process. The Sindh Police’s proactive stance and enhanced security measures reflect a commitment to upholding democratic principles and safeguarding the rights of citizens to participate in the electoral process without fear or intimidation.
