Water Level in Hub Dam Rises Due to Recent Rains, Nearing Full Capacity

Recent heavy rains in the hill ranges of Sindh and Balochistan have led to a significant rise in the water level of Hub Dam. According to sources from the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), in just two days, the water level in the dam increased by 5 feet.

As of July 22, the water level in Hub Dam had exceeded 329 feet, approaching the reservoir’s capacity. The dam’s water level has already crossed the mark of 334 feet, and if another 5 feet of water accumulates, the reservoir will reach its full capacity this year.

The water storage capacity of Hub Dam stands at 339 feet. It is worth noting that since its completion in 1981, the dam has been filled ten times so far, demonstrating its significance in water storage for the region.

During heavy rainfall, the spillways of Hub Dam were also opened in July last year to manage the water flow. When the dam reaches its full capacity, the excess water is discharged through the Hub River.

Hub Dam plays a crucial role in providing water to the region’s urban centers. It supplies 100 million gallons of water to Karachi and 60 million gallons to Hub per day, ensuring a steady water supply for these populous areas. With the current rise in water levels, authorities are closely monitoring the situation to manage the water discharge and avoid any potential flooding risks in the downstream areas.
