Caretaker Chief Minister Sindh orders urgent cleanup in Karachi

Caretaker Chief Minister of Sindh, Justice (Retired) Maqbool Baqer, chaired a meeting to address the dismal sanitation situation in Karachi, expressing dissatisfaction with the performance of the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board. The meeting included representatives from civic agencies, such as the Mayor of Karachi, Commissioner, Secretaries of Finance, Transport, Local Government, Works, and Deputy Commissioners.

During the meeting, the caretaker chief minister voiced displeasure with the solid waste management board’s efforts, citing insufficient improvement in the city’s cleanliness and the presence of issues such as overflowing sewers and cable clutter on poles. He instructed the solid waste management authorities to clean the city and provide a report within four days.

Emphasizing the use of public funds allocated to cleaning companies, the caretaker chief minister indicated that addressing the city’s sanitation challenges is the responsibility of the solid waste and town management entities. He asserted a commitment to resolving the issues and stated that he would not tolerate any further negligence.

The meeting also involved a briefing by the CEO of the Water Corporation, Asadullah, who highlighted drainage system issues in areas like Scheme 33 and Orangi. The caretaker chief minister directed the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and the Cantonment Board to convene a meeting to address power-related challenges and emphasized the urgency of resolving sanitation and drainage problems.

Mayor Karachi, Murtaza Wahab, shared updates on ongoing initiatives, including the use of fiber covers for gutters to prevent theft and the commencement of beautification work on Shaara Faisal. Additionally, plans for road ironing in New Nazimabad and Banaras were discussed, along with the installation of drainage lines on roads.
