A power breakdown at the Dhabeji pumping station has disrupted the operation of 10 water pumps supplying Karachi, raising concerns over a possible reduction in water supply to the metropolis.

According to a spokesperson for the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KW&SC), a cable fault in K-Electric’s system caused the power breakdown at Dhabeji on Sunday.
The outage affected the electricity supply to the third phase, fourth phase and K-III pump houses at the Dhabeji pumping station.
“Overall, 10 pumps have stopped from 21 water pumps,” the spokesperson said.
The shutdown of these pumps could partially affect the supply of water to Karachi, particularly the quantity being supplied to different parts of the city.
The water corporation warned that the suspension of 10 pumps could lead to a reduction in the volume of water reaching Karachi.
Authorities are currently coordinating with K-Electric to restore the electricity supply and resume pumping operations as soon as possible.
The spokesperson said the affected water pumps would be brought back into operation immediately after power supply is restored at Dhabeji.
The Dhabeji pumping station is a key source of water for Karachi, making any prolonged disruption to its pumping operations a potential concern for the city’s water supply.
Residents may face reduced water availability if the power outage continues for an extended period, although the extent of the impact will depend on how quickly electricity and pumping operations are restored.
The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation said its officials are in contact with K-Electric regarding the fault and are seeking an early restoration of power.
Once electricity is restored, all 10 suspended pumps are expected to resume operations, helping restore the normal quantity of water being supplied to Karachi.
