The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has released its 2026 Global Liveability Index, ranking 173 cities worldwide based on healthcare, education, stability, infrastructure, and environmental quality.

While Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen, retained the top spot as the world’s most livable city, here’s where Pakistan’s largest city, Karachi, ranks on the list.

According to the latest Global Liveability Index published by the Economist Intelligence Unit, the world’s most livable cities ranking for 2026 has placed Karachi at 170th out of 173 cities.

Copenhagen retained its position as the world’s most livable city for the second consecutive year after achieving perfect scores in stability, education, and infrastructure.

Vienna ranked second after holding the top position from 2022 to 2024. Melbourne secured third place, followed by Sydney in fourth. Zurich and Geneva completed the top six.

In Asia, Osaka emerged as the region’s highest-ranked city, placing seventh globally. Adelaide ranked eighth, while Vancouver and Tokyo secured ninth and tenth positions, respectively.

Karachi was the only Pakistani city included in the index and retained its 170th position from the previous year.

The only cities ranked below Karachi were Dhaka in 171st place, Tripoli in 172nd, and Damascus at the bottom of the rankings in 173rd place.

The report also highlighted notable declines for several Middle Eastern cities, attributing the changes largely to regional conflicts, including the Iran-Israel war. Tehran ranked 164th overall.

Among the biggest declines, Muscat dropped 14 places to 123rd, while Kuwait City fell 12 places to 105th in this year’s Global Liveability Index.
