Following the start of Muharram on June 17, the government employees in Pakistan – including Karachi, will get four day holidays next week.

The dates were announced after the Muharram moon was not sighted, resulting in an adjustment to the Islamic calendar and the observance schedule for the holy month.

The federal government traditionally declares public holidays on 9th and 10th Muharram each year to facilitate religious gatherings, processions, and security arrangements across the country.

The extended break would provide government workers with four consecutive days off, subject to the issuance of the official notification by the authorities.

The Cabinet Division had earlier issued a yearly holiday notification in January, which listed Ashura holidays for June 25 and 26, based on an expected earlier start of Muharram.

Authorities across Pakistan are now expected to finalize security, traffic management, and crowd control plans in major cities ahead of the Muharram period. Special arrangements are typically made during this time to ensure the safety of processions and public gatherings, particularly in sensitive areas.

Law enforcement agencies, provincial governments, and local administrations are likely to coordinate closely in the coming days to manage public events and maintain order throughout the religious month.
