Following the surge in road accidents involving heavy vehicles, the Karachi administration has decided to introduce a separate lane for heavy traffic across the city.
According to media reports, the designated lane will carry a maximum speed limit of 30 km/h, and heavy vehicles will be strictly required to remain within this lane while adhering to the dictated speed.

The decision was finalized in a meeting led by Commissioner Karachi Syed Hasan Naqvi, with a focus on enhancing road safety and strengthening the enforcement of traffic regulations.
The meeting was attended by transporters, Additional IG Police Afzal Khan, the Secretary of Transport, and the DIG Traffic.
Key issues concerning goods transporters were discussed, including parking arrangements, issuance of heavy transport vehicle (HTV) licenses, vehicle registration, and insurance matters.

Commissioner Naqvi directed traffic police to take firm action to curb accidents and ensure compliance with traffic rules. He assured transporters that their concerns, particularly regarding parking facilities, would be resolved as far as possible.
As part of the initiative, authorities will also review plans for a dedicated terminal for goods transporters.
To further reduce accident risks, a specific HTV lane will be developed along the Mai Kolachi to Qayyumabad Bridge route, with lane marking work set to begin immediately.

Once completed, heavy vehicles will be restricted to this designated lane only.
The meeting also examined proposals to strengthen vehicle fitness inspections and improve insurance coverage for both vehicles and bus passengers.
Overall, the initiative is intended to reduce accidents involving heavy traffic, improve traffic flow, and ease logistical challenges faced by transporters in Karachi.
