NADRA has clarified the procedure for citizens who want to update their marital status and remove an ex-spouse’s name from official records following a divorce.
According to the authority, individuals can change their status from “married” to “divorced” in NADRA’s database once all legal requirements are fulfilled.
The process begins with obtaining a valid divorce or khula decree from the family court or arbitration council.

After securing the decree, the individual must approach the Union Council where the marriage was originally registered.
At the Union Council, an application is submitted for the issuance of a computerized divorce certificate.
This application includes details of both parties, the divorce date, relevant case numbers, CNIC copies, and witness information.
Once the Union Council completes verification, the divorce certificate is issued.

NADRA has stressed that both former spouses must separately visit NADRA offices and submit the computerized divorce certificate to update their own records.
The clarification was issued after a citizen raised a complaint on social media, claiming that NADRA records still showed his former spouse as “wife” despite receiving a divorce certificate from the Union Council.
In response, NADRA explained that marital status is only updated when the official divorce certificate is provided directly to NADRA by each individual.
The authority said this step is necessary to ensure legal accuracy and proper verification in national records.

NADRA reaffirmed that without verified documentation, no changes can be made to marital status, highlighting the importance of completing the full process through both the Union Council and NADRA.
