Karachi police have begun preparations to launch no-parking fines following the rollout of the city’s e-challan system.

According to officials, special “robot cars” have been developed to detect parking violations.

In the first phase, these automated vehicles, equipped with smart cameras, will patrol Saddar and Tariq Road.

Police say the “robot cars,” which move at a speed of around 20 kilometres per hour, will record vehicles parked in no-parking zones and issue e-challans automatically.

Earlier, residents expressed concern after e-challans meant for vehicles from other provinces mistakenly started reaching Karachi owners.

According to Jang News, the Sindh government is reviewing a proposal to significantly reduce the amount of e-challan fines.

Officials are considering this after public criticism that penalties for traffic violations in Karachi are unusually high compared to other parts of the country.

Authorities say the consultation process is ongoing, and a final decision will be taken after proper evaluation.

Earlier, Karachi’s DSP Traffic Police Kashif Nadeem has reminded citizens that both drivers and front-seat passengers must wear seatbelts, or they will be fined.

Speaking on Geo Pakistan, he said repeat violators will also have any previously unpaid fines added to their new challan.

He noted that Karachi traffic authorities do not have complete records of vehicles from other provinces and warned that fake number plates are commonly being used in the city.

The DSP added that work has begun to increase the number of cameras across Karachi to 12,000.

He also reiterated last week’s reminder that women riding as passengers on motorcycles must wear helmets.

The e-ticketing system has already started issuing challans for double-helmet violations.
