The National Assembly of Pakistan has approved major amendments to Pakistan Army Act, Pakistan Air Force Act and Pakistan Navy Act, which mark an impressive change for Pakistan’s defense forces.

Defense Minister Khawaja Asif introduced and passed two bills without opposition from members on the other side. Under these amendments, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) would also serve as Chief of Defense Forces for five years.

Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar said this move aims to strengthen coordination among all three branches of the armed forces and unify command under one leadership position.

One of the key changes involves the elimination of the position of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, which will no longer exist after its current chairman retires.

According to the government, this restructuring aims at aligning defense laws with the 27th Constitutional Amendment for uniformity across Pakistan’s military governance structure.
