One of Pakistan’s most respected educationists and social reformers, Dr. Arfa Sayeda Zehra, passed away today, Monday, November 10.

Pakistani actor Adeel Hashmi confirmed her passing on his social media account, writing, “Dr. Arfa Sayeda has also left us. Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return.”

Dr. Zehra was widely admired for her contributions to education, women’s rights, and cultural preservation.

She earned her Ph.D. in History from the University of Hawaiʻi after studying at Lahore College for Women University and Government College University, Lahore.

Over her illustrious career, she served as Principal of Lahore College for Women and Government College for Women, Gulberg, later becoming a Professor Emeritus at Forman Christian College.

She specialized in Urdu literature and intellectual history and was a passionate advocate for education reforms, the preservation of Pakistan’s cultural heritage, and promoting ethical public values.

She also held a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Chair in Cultural Heritage, reflecting her dedication to protecting Pakistan’s intellectual and literary traditions.

She served as Special Advisor to the Prime Minister on Education and National Cohesion, and chaired the National Commission on the Status of Women.
