Motorists in Karachi should brace for a new era of automated traffic enforcement as the e-challan system will go live from tomorrow in the city.
This new system will automatically detect violations through surveillance cameras and issue electronic challans in the name of the vehicle owner at their home address.
According to DSP Kashif Nadeem, who is overseeing the project, the initiative has been rolled out on a limited scale in Karachi with initially targeting 18 to 20 major traffic violations that impact public safety.
These include not wearing helmets, driving without seat belts, one-way driving, signal jumping, speeding, lane violations, and the use of tinted glasses.

Cameras installed across key city routes will capture the vehicle’s image, read its number plate, and verify details through the Excise Department’s database.
Each e-challan will include three photographic proofs, the fine amount, and penalty points on the driver’s license.
Challans will be sent via courier to violators’ home addresses, accompanied by an SMS notification. A QR code will allow motorists to view colored images of the offense online.
Under the system, violators have 21 days to pay fines, with a 50% discount for payments made within 14 days. Delays beyond 21 days will result in doubling the fine amount.
Authorities have also announced that fake number plates will be tracked through Safe City cameras, and legal action will follow.
Additionally, officers are being trained to issue QR code-based challans for no-parking violations as designated zones are marked citywide.
How to cancel a wrong E-Challan?
Citizens disputing a challan can visit one of 11 Traffic Facilitation Centers across Karachi.
Complaints will be reviewed by a three-member committee comprising an SSP, DSP, and a CPLC representative. If the violation is proven invalid, the challan will be cancelled.
Traffic Police urge citizens to drive responsibly and follow the law to ensure road safety for all.
