The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has launched a large-scale operation against dangerous structures and unauthorised buildings in Karachi, targeting 540 hazardous properties under the illegal constructions crackdown Karachi campaign.
The operation is being carried out with the support of the district administration and police.
SBCA Director General Muzammil Hussain Halepoto stressed that protecting human lives is the authority’s highest priority.
The latest SBCA report has identified 540 dangerous buildings across Karachi, including 407 in District South, 70 in Central, 24 in Keamari, 14 in East, 18 in Korangi, five in Malir, and two in West.
Many of these buildings have already been sealed and vacated, while the remaining structures are in the process of being cleared. Once vacated, demolitions will be carried out in different phases.
Inspectors and field officers have been directed to conduct physical surveys of their assigned areas, identify hazardous structures, stop illegal construction, and submit reports to the Technical Committee on Dangerous Buildings.
Each officer must maintain a daily field book, have it signed by senior officials, and provide written assurance that no illegal construction exists in their designated area.

Additionally, officers are required to submit monthly reports covering inspections, demolitions, court proceedings, complaints, and building plans. These reports will be reviewed by the Directorate of Vigilance and forwarded to the DG Secretariat.
The IT section will manage updated records of dangerous buildings and demolitions, while the Administration section has been instructed to introduce a grading system to evaluate officers’ performance.
Strict disciplinary action will be taken under E&D rules against officers failing to file reports or found negligent in their duties, according to SBCA directives.
Halepoto urged citizens to report hazardous or illegal buildings through SBCA helplines (99232355, 99230393) or the official website www.sbca.gos.pk, stressing community cooperation in preventing accidents and ensuring public safety.
