India has officially received clearance to play Pakistan in Asia Cup after days of speculation and heated debates following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that strained diplomatic relations between the neighboring countries.
The Indian Union Sports Ministry confirmed the decision on Thursday, stating that while bilateral cricket remains suspended, India will participate in multilateral tournaments, including the Asia Cup 2025, where the marquee clash is set for September 14.
This clearance was announced alongside India’s 15-member squad for the continental tournament, with Suryakumar Yadav named captain. The team combines experience and fresh talent, reflecting a balanced approach as India aims to defend its title.

Reaffirming its policy, the Indian Sports Ministry clarified India will not host or travel for bilateral matches with Pakistan but will participate in tournaments involving multiple nations as guided by international sports regulations.
The ministry also introduced a simplified visa system for athletes and officials. It includes multi-entry visas valid up to five years, strengthening India’s position as a prime destination for global sporting events.
This formal announcement follows remarks by Indian Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya in July. At that time, he indicated no objection to India competing against Pakistan in neutral or multilateral venues abroad.
The Asian Cricket Council had considered contingency plans, including a hybrid model similar to 2023 when India played matches in Sri Lanka. Thursday’s statement ended uncertainty, confirming India’s commitment to the event.
In Pakistan, preparations are in full swing. Led by Salman Agha, the revamped squad began training in Dubai after former captains Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan were sidelined during a contract restructuring process.

Head coach Mike Hesson revealed Babar is refining his game, particularly against spin. Meanwhile, consistent performers have been rewarded, with Mohammad Wasim, Salman Mirza, and Fakhar Zaman returning to the competitive squad.
Pakistan will compete in a tri-series against Afghanistan and UAE starting August 29 in Sharjah before beginning their Asia Cup campaign on September 12, setting the stage for the Dubai clash.
With India’s clearance and Pakistan’s new-look squad, anticipation builds for the September 14 showdown, a contest that transcends cricket and draws global attention due to its political and sporting significance.
