Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has announced that advance preparations for drainage have been completed before the start of seasonal rains, ensuring citizens face minimum difficulties during the coming monsoon.
The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) began cleaning storm drains across the city from June 20, 2025, to prevent urban flooding. According to Wahab, 46 large and small drains are being cleared.
So far, workers have removed about 3.24 million cubic feet of garbage and waste material from storm drains. All collected waste is being transported to designated KMC dumping sites.
Wahab explained that choke points discovered during the cleaning process are also being cleared to ensure smooth drainage. He said the entire cleaning operation will continue until the monsoon ends.

The Meteorological Department has already forecast heavy rainfall, and the KMC remains on high alert. Wahab assured that his administration is working to mitigate rain-related problems across Karachi.
He added that all local government institutions are in close coordination, including the Water Corporation, Sindh Solid Waste Management Board, and district administration, who have been deployed on city roads.
The mayor confirmed that dewatering pumps are ready for use in all low-lying areas. Drainage systems in every underpass have also been kept operational to avoid traffic disruption.
To strengthen emergency response, Wahab said the leaves of KMC employees assigned to rain-duty have been cancelled. He assured that workers will remain active during all expected rainfall events. Wahab vowed that his administration would try its best within limited resources to meet citizens’ expectations and reduce hardships during the upcoming rainy season.
