Nida Saleh has become Pakistan’s first female train driver, proudly serving on the Lahore Orange Line Metro Train, a milestone achievement for women in the country’s public transport sector.
Speaking to ARY News in an exclusive interview, Nida shared her inspiring journey. A graduate in Transportation Engineering, she said she had a passion for trains since childhood. After completing her education, she applied for a job with the Orange Line as an engineer. At the time, the team was forming a new batch of train drivers.
“I told the management that this field should be open to women as well,” she recalled. “They supported me and encouraged me to take the role.”
Nida admitted her family was hesitant at first, but eventually supported her after seeing her determination and dedication.
Nida Saleh Makes History As Pakistan’s First Female Train Driver
“Driving a train is a job of full responsibility,” she said. “Before every trip, I check the servicing and maintenance myself. Only after I’m fully satisfied, I operate the train while following all SOPs.”
Nida’s entry into this male-dominated profession is being hailed as a major step forward for women’s empowerment in Pakistan.
The Orange Line Metro, operational since 2020, runs every five minutes from Ali Town to Dera Gujran, covering 26 stations between 6 AM and 10 PM daily.
Nida’s success is not only a personal triumph but also a symbol of growing opportunities and inclusion for women in Pakistan’s transport and infrastructure sectors.
