In today’s world, most people cannot imagine life without smartphones. But their era may soon come to an end.
Google and its parent company Alphabet’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Sundar Pichai, has made a prediction about this shift. He noted the rising demand for Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered products.
While announcing Alphabet’s quarterly earnings, he highlighted that AI-based devices like smart glasses are emerging fast.
According to him, smartphones will stay in focus for the next 2 to 3 years. However, as smart glasses become more popular, smartphones usage will start to decline.
Pichai added that Gemini 2.5 series, especially the Pro model, is performing exceptionally well, and it is not even full launched yet.
This is not the first time a tech executive has predicted the fall of smartphones. In early 2025, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also said that the smartphone era is nearing its end. Altman hinted that OpenAI is developing a smartphone alternative.
He mentioned that the company aims to build ChatGPT-powered hardware devices as replacements for smartphones.
OpenAI is not only company working on this. Apple is also developing augmented reality (AR) glasses. Apple believes this device could eventually replace the iPhone.
However, OpenAI may take a different approach. What their AI-powered device will look like remains to be seen.
