Unsafe buildings in Karachi

Following the tragic collapse of a six-storey building in Lyari’s Baghdad area, the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has released updated figures on unsafe structures across Karachi.

According to SBCA data, Karachi has a total of 578 dilapidated buildings, many of which pose serious safety risks – especially during the ongoing monsoon season.

The highest number of uninhabitable buildings are located in District South, where 456 such structures have been identified.

District Central follows with 66 dangerous buildings, while Keamari stands third with 23. In Korangi and East (Sharqi) districts, the number of unsafe buildings is 14 and 13, respectively.

Meanwhile, Malir District has 4, and the West District has the least, with just two unsafe buildings.

Despite these alarming statistics, SBCA has not yet begun evacuations of residents from these deteriorating structures.

The authority typically places warning banners on unsafe buildings every year before the monsoon season.
