The Sindh government has announced plans to set up 100 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across Karachi.
Sindh Energy Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah shared the update while speaking during the Sindh Assembly’s budget session.
The minister said that new legislation is being prepared to support and regulate EV infrastructure across the province.
He added that this move is part of Sindh’s wider efforts to promote clean energy and eco-friendly transport systems.
Shah also asserted that Sindh has the most autonomous local councils in the country, showing the provincial government’s focus on decentralisation and better governance.
However, he raised concern that the federal government is diverting funds meant for Sindh, especially Karachi, to other areas.
This announcement comes just after the federal government introduced Pakistan’s National Electric Vehicle (NEV) Policy 2025–30.
The policy was launched by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production, Haroon Akhtar Khan.
In a joint press briefing with Secretary Industries Saif Anjum and Engineering Development Board (EDB) CEO Khuda Bukhsh, Haroon said the NEV policy aims to provide clean, low-cost transport options.
He noted that the transport sector is one of the largest contributors to air pollution, and shifting to EVs will help reduce carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuels.
The combination of provincial and federal initiatives is expected to boost EV adoption and improve air quality, especially in major urban centers like Karachi.
